                  Parenting

If you’d like to improve your relationship with your child or teen, I can help you learn how to take charge and set limits in a loving and connected way. Kindness and firmness are not opposites.

Did you know that only 28% of parents are consistent in dealing with misbehavior? Are you going in circles with the Reward/Punishment Cycle? To begin, there are Four Goals of Misbehavior: Attention, Power, Revenge and Display of Inadequacy. You can determine the goal by identifying how you feel about the misbehavior, be it homework or chores for younger children or using the internet or cell phone for teens.

Parenting is more complex in today’s world. Our marvelous technology brings with it the ‘Pop Culture’ that our young people become part of very early in their life. This changes the Parent-Child relationship that existed in the previous generation and challenges us as parents to take it to a different level. With the same speed as a click of mouse come expectations that often lead young people to expect immediate gratification. Today’s world, of course, has many good things happening. It’s just different than what you grew up with.

I have worked with parents for many years in a variety of settings: As a Parent Educator, Teacher and Marriage & Family Therapist and occasionally I conduct Parenting Groups.
